Belarus’ foreign minister dies aged 64

November 26, BPN. Belarusian Foreign Minister Uładzimir Makiej has died, BelTA reported at 4:35 p.m., citing Foreign Ministry spokesman Anatol Hłaz.

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Makiej was born on August 5, 1958 in Niekraševičy, Hrodna region. He is a graduate of Minsk State Linguistic University and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Austria.

Makiej joined the Belarusian foreign ministry in 1993. He served as Belarus’ representative to the Council of Europe and a counsellor at the Belarusian embassy to France in 1996-99.

He served as Alaksandr Łukašenka’s aide from 2000 to 2008 and head of his administration from 2008 to 2012.

Łukašenka appointed him foreign minister in August 2012.
