Spokesman priest appointed Red Church administrator to communicate with officials

December 1, BPN. The Roman Catholic Church in Belarus appointed its acting press secretary, Priest Juryj Sańko, administrator of the parish of Saints Simon and Helena to handle repair work and talks with officials.

The appointment was made in the final days of October, the church said on its portal. The congregation of the parish will temporarily move to a cathedral in Minsk, it added.

Minskaja Spadčyna, a state-run company which owns the Red Church, terminated the lease with its parish in October, citing repair work.

Roman Catholic priests have often been persecuted after the disputed 2020 election over their civic position. The church leadership, however, took a fairly moderate stance.
