Pentagon sees no indications of Belarus joining Russia’s war on Ukraine

January 10, BPN. The United States Department of Defense sees no indications of Belarus preparing to enter the war with Ukraine on Russia’s side, a senior defense official told journalists on January 9.

“We just believe it’s continued training between the Belarusians and the Russians,” he added, commenting on reports about the increasing number of called-up Russian reservists taking part in joint drills with Belarusian troops.

The official did not comment on the number of Russian servicemen currently present in Belarus, or the weapons and equipment that Russia may leave in Belarus after the end of the exercises.

The Ukrainian military command has not commented on developments in Belarus in its operational reports for the last two days.

On February 24, 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine. Alaksandr Łukašenka admitted that Belarus participated in it, but said Belarusian troops were “not killing anyone.”

Authorities in Minsk denied Belarusian troops’ involvement in combat operations on the Russian side. However, Belarus allowed Russian troops and weapons to move freely through the country, use its airspace, refuel and store military equipment and attack Ukraine from its territory.
