Former presidential hopeful’s case goes to court

January 12, BPN. Belarusian proseсutors have referred to court a criminal case against Valer Capkała, a former official who planned to challenge Alaksandr Łukašenka during the 2020 election.

The Porsecutor General’s office says he is charged with 12 criminal offences, such as taking a bribe, creating an extremist group, libeling Łukašenka, inciting hatred and calling for terrorist attacks.

A special procedure case against the exiled politician was opened on December 16.

Special procedure means that a judge is likely to try him in absentia to annul his passport.
