IOC confirms sanctions against Russia, Belarus, sets conditions for athletes

January 26, BPN. The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed sanctions against Belarus and Russia introduced earlier over Russia’s war in Ukraine and Belarusian authorities’ complicity in it.

The IOC banned flags, anthems, colors or any other identifications associated with both countries at its sports events and venues in solidarity with Ukrainian athletes and the Ukrainian Olympic community.

It also prohibited Belarusian and Russian officials from attending any international sports events or meetings.

The IOC leadership stressed that no athlete should be “prevented from competing just because of their passport.” It announced “individual checks” for all athletes and said it would allow Belarusians and Russians to compete only in a neutral status, even if they declare antiwar positions.

The statement comes following the Olympic Summit held on December 9 and consultation calls with the IOC members on January 17 and 19.

“With regard to the sanctions, participants in each of the consultation calls unanimously reaffirmed and called for a reinforcement of the sanctions already in place,” the board said.
