Hungary lobbies for lifting sanctions on Belarus’ wood processing – Belarusian envoy

April 17, BPN. Hungary supports lifting some sanctions against Belarus in the wood processing sector, Uładzimir Ułachovič, the Belarusian ambassador to Hungary, told Belarus 1 TV channel in an interview broadcast on Sunday evening.

Hungarian partners may also help Belarus obtain wood pellet quotas, currently in high demand on the European market, the diplomat added.

On April 12, Belarusian Foreign Minister Siarhiej Alejnik signed a memorandum on cooperation in the energy and nuclear power sectors with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó, Ułachovič said. Hungary highly values Belarusian experience with the nuclear power plant and agreed to set up an expert group, he added.

Minsk and Budapest also have similar opinions on the situation in Ukraine, with “a common desire to stop the active phase of this conflict as soon as possible,” the diplomat noted.

Alejnik visited Budapest from April 11 to 12, following Szijjártó’s visit to Minsk two months earlier. Hungarian foreign minister said that he went to Belarus to “represent the position of peace” over the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Hungary remains the only EU country that maintains official contact with Minsk.
