Envoy advises Belarusians in Sudan to wait for an opportunity to evacuate
April 30, BPN. The evacuation of Belarusians from Sudan will be carried out when their safety is ensured, Belarusian Ambassador to Egypt and Sudan Siarhiej Ciarenćjeŭ said, the state-owned TV station ONT reported.
“The main difficulty is that the situation is unstable. Parties to the conflict regularly come to an agreement. We hear news of a ceasefire all the time. But at the same time both sides violate these agreements,” Ciarenćjeŭ said.
“We proceed from the assumption that our nationals’ independent movement across Sudan, on their own initiative, cannot be considered as an organized, safe evacuation, as it is unknown who controls various parts of it. In this respect, we cooperate with the Russians, who are focused on systemic approaches to organizing this important process. When it’s clear that the safety of our nationals has been ensured, the evacuation will be carried out accordingly,” the diplomat said.
The ambassador was unable to specify the timeframe for the evacuation, noting that “not only Belarus, not only Russia, but other countries as well have advised their nationals in Khartoum, in hot spots, to stay indoors and in safe areas.”
“We very much hope for an urgent peaceful settlement, and view it as today’s top priority,” Ciarenćjeŭ said.
On April 17, the Belarusian foreign ministry advised Belarusians against visiting the conflict-torn African country. Three days later, it said 10 Belarusian nationals were still staying there.
