FC Neman sports director arrested

June 28, BPN. Belarusian authorities have arrested a former soccer star and sports director of a Hrodna club for allegedly supporting anti-government protests.

Dźmitryj Kavalonak, FC Neman’s top goalscorer of all time, was detained for following “extremist” social media accounts and joining “illegal” marches, a pro-government Telegram channel reported today.

Kavalonak is the latest soccer figure to face reprisals in Belarus, where Alaksandr Łukašenka has cracked down on dissent after the 2020 disputed presidential election. In December, goalkeeper coach Vasil Chamutoŭski received a two-year house arrest sentence and in April, police arrested Krumkačy player Alaksandr Jackievič.
