Interior ministry brands opposition online community “extremist” group

May 2, Pozirk. The interior ministry branded founders, administrators and followers of My ne Kholopy online community as an extremist group, taking the total of entries on the register to 200, its website says.

The group may also be known as Aleh Žałnoŭ, it noted.

The extremist designation also covers the community’s social media pages, email addresses, its Boosty and Donation Alerts accounts and the logo displaying a hand clenched into a fist with a white-red-white ribbon.

Many independent media outlets and online communities have been branded extremist groups for political reasons in Belarus after the disputed 2020 presidential election as authorities kept using terrorism and extremism designations to silence critical voices.

Association with an extremist group carries a penalty of two to seven years in prison.
