August 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Poland has reported that it stopped at least 500 attempts by third-country migrants to enter illegally from Belarus from August 1 to 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal migration rose by 80 percent month on month and twofold year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland reported at least 21,985 incidents, Latvia reported 3,713, and Lithuania, 374.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same period, Latvia reported 152 incidents and Lithuania, only eight, a sharp decline since last month and year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month, the European Union prevented at least 660 illegal entries from Belarus. That was 0.5 percent fewer than from July 1 to 9, and 50 percent fewer than from August 1 to 9, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossing attempts rose by 1.9 percent year on year to 26,193 from January 1 to August 1 with Poland registering an 18.6-percent increase (22,059) and Latvia and Lithuania reporting a decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis started at the Belarus-EU border in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the border escalated this spring with the spike in illegal border crossings and attacks on Polish border guards by people trying to cross the border illegally. One of them resulted in the death of Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek, stabbed at the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
