August 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Supreme Court will consider former journalist Alena Cima\u0161\u010duk’s appeal against her five-year prison sentence on August 16, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Judge Siarhiej Hura\u016d will preside over the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 3, the Brest Regional Court found Cima\u0161\u010duk guilty of discrediting Belarus, inciting hatred and association with an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cima\u0161\u010duk had worked at the state newspaper Brestskiy Vestnik <\/em>and the television network Brest<\/em>. As a freelancer, she also cooperated with regional media such as Vecherniy Brest<\/em>, Brestskiy Kuryer<\/em> and Brestskaya Gazeta<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 13, Belarusian human rights groups declared Cima\u0161\u010duk a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the BAJ, 37 journalists and other media industry workers are in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights community currently recognizes 1,384 people as Belarus\u2019 political prisoners, but the actual number of repressed people is significantly higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
