August 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A distrcit court in Mahilo\u016d has sentenced political prisoner Cimur Ryzapur to another year behind bars for disobedience to prison authorities, Viasna Brest reported yesterday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2021, a district court in Brest sentenced him to 4.5 years in a penal colony for rioting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court sentenced four defendants to 7-7.5 years behind bars in connection with an alleged terrorist plot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Hryhorje\u016d, Viktoryja Vo\u0142\u010dak, Hanna Sava\u010dkina and her mother Ta\u0107ciana Rusak were found guilty of high treason, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same case, the Minsk City Court had sentenced Valeryj Vodzin to 20 years in prison, without the defendant being present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brest Regional Court began hearing a case against Vital Kor\u0161un, a former political prisoner based in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, Viasna reported. Authorities accused him of defaming the head of state, inciting hatred, calling for international sanctions, rioting and violent disorder. He could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee said it opened a special procedure case against Vijaleta Maj\u0161uk, an artist who had moved to Ukraine. She is suspected of setting up an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Mahilo\u016d arrested a driver who allgedly participated in post-election protests, a pro-government source reported. He is also suspected of signing up for the opposition Victory Plan (Pieramoha).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) declared the Pahonia Hrodna project and its social media an extremist group, the interior ministry reported. The KGB suspected foreign-based activist Dzianis \u010ca\u0161\u010devik of involvement with the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights groups labeled 22 people as former political prisoners. They granted the status to Pavie\u0142 Ba\u0161ynski, Siarhiej Mieljaniec, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Janu\u0161kievi\u010d, Andrej Bahadzia\u017e, Kiry\u0142 Kaniuk, Aleh Kira\u016d, D\u017amitryj Kubrako\u016d, Viktar Kryvanosa\u016d, Alaksandar \u0160utko, Alaksandar Hovin, D\u017amitryj So\u010dy\u016dka, Maksim Bubovi\u010d, Kry\u015bcina Stalarova, Zachar Kostka, D\u017amitryj Maholin, Maksim Kryvarot, Volha Kuran\u010dyk, Siarhiej \u0141abanok, Andrej \u017da\u0142ko\u016dski, Ludmi\u0142a Han\u010darenka, D\u017amitryj Makieje\u016d and Jaka\u016d Ramanienka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 14, human rights defenders identified at least 1,384 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
