August 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Minsk City Court has found Iryna Takar\u010duk, the mother of blogger and former political prisoner Volha Takar\u010duk, guilty of promoting extremism, Strana Dlya Zhizni<\/em> reported yesterday. The judge sentenced her to three years at a penal colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courts in the Hrodna region considered a couple of cases under an Administrative Code article against the distribution of “extremist content,” Pravo Imeyut reported. The Zelva District Court tried Alena Halas and the Navahrudak District Court tried Andrej Buziuk. The verdicts are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities arrested two residents in Kamianiec, Brest region, for participating in 2020 protests, a pro-government source reported. The charges and whereabouts are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vital \u0141azarovi\u010d, a Minsker who works at the Aetsoft IT company, was arrested for online comments about officials and the ongoing war in Ukraine, Mediazona<\/em> said. His charges and whereabouts are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities added the video “There Is Trouble in My Homeland” by poet Alaksandar Bal to the list of “extremist content.” They also banned the Odnoklassniki pages Franak Via\u010dorka, Volny Bie\u0142arus, Belarusian People’s Embassy in Lithuania and several others, according to the information ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 15, human rights defenders identified at least 1,384 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
