August 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated 15 people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,373, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dozen of them have already been convicted: Stanis\u0142a\u016d \u0160apiel, D\u017amitryj Pa\u017aniako\u016d, Anton \u0160arupa, Vital Sa\u016dko, Barys Hrynkievi\u010d, Andrej Mirej\u010dyk, Andrej Hryhorje\u016d, Viktoryja Vo\u0142\u010dak, Hanna Sava\u010dkina, Ta\u0107ciana Rusak, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Nava\u017eanca\u016d and Dzianis Saka\u0142o\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their charges ranged from disturbing public order and inciting hatred to extremism and high treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna also granted the status to Vilen Turhuna\u016d, a former police chief from Homiel, as well as D\u017amitryj Asijuk and Ja\u016dhien Puha\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were taken into custody on suspicion of terrorism, deliberately disabling communication lines, inciting hatred, calling for sanctions, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna demanded respect for the right to a fair trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights group called on the Belarusian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners, reconsider politically motivated sentences, and end political repression against the country’s citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
