August 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The positions of Minsk and the Vatican regarding the war in Ukraine are in \u201cperfect harmony,\u201d Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told Archbishop Ante Jozi\u0107, the outgoing apostolic nuncio to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur views. . . coincide, especially on security issues in Europe and the conflict in Ukraine confirms this,\u201d his press office quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe \u201cneeds a new peace treaty” but the efforts of the Catholic Church alone are insufficient, the Belarusian ruler said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European countries lack “strong leaders who would prioritize the interests of their peoples” instead of obeying and pleasing others, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jozi\u0107, a native of Croatia, has served as apostolic nuncio to Belarus since May 2020 and is expected to leave Minsk in late September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the 2020 presidential election, the relationship between the state and the Catholic Church deteriorated as many priests and faithful denounced police brutality and repression. Some clerics were arrested or forced to flee the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin. The Vatican has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and peace talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
