August 26, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The second group of about ten Lithuanian border guards, including K9 and criminal intelligence officers, left for Latvia on August 19 to help it guard its border with Belarus, 15min.lt <\/em>reported, citing Rustamas Liubajevas, the head of Lithuania\u2019s State Border Guard Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first group of nine Lithuanian border guards left for Latvia on August 5. Earlier reports said that Riga had requested up to 15 additional border guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian and Latvian border guards will evaluate available information and statistics given decreasing illegal migration flows at Latvia’s border with Belarus and decide on further extension of the mission, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the European Union thwarted at least 27,469 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 23,048 attempts via Poland, 3,991 via Latvia and 430 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
