August 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Serbian court of appeals has heard the case against Belarusian filmmaker Andrej Hniot and has up to 30 days to decide on his extradition to Belarus, Serbia’s N1<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hniot’s lawyer Hanna Macije\u016dskaja confirmed this information on her Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors insisted that all the conditions for Hniot’s extradition to Belarus had been met, while the defense argued that his prosecution in Belarus was politically motivated. Hniot denied committing any crimes nd said he was wanted in Belarus because of his political views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hniot was arrested in Serbia in October 2023 at the request of the Belarusian police for alleged tax evasion. The man has been under house arrest since May 31 when the Belgrade High Court ordered his extradition to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hniot\u2019s persecution in Belarus may be related to video production for SOS.by<\/em>, an opposition association that Belarusian police branded an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The filmmaker also cooperated with Current Time<\/em>, a television and digital news network produced by Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty<\/em> in cooperation with the Voice of America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition, exiled activists, artists, international human rights groups and leading political actors urged Serbia not to extradite Hniot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
