August 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian police have declared exiled human rights activist Leanid Sudalenka wanted, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He commented by saying that reprisals against him as a rights activist began for the defense of protesters in 2020. Authorities imprisoned him after a “closed and unfair” trial. Sudalenka pointed out that after his release, he has continued to denounce repression and the conditions of political prisoners in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist said that if he returned to the country, authorities would immediately arrest him and probably torture and humiliate him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And our answer should be this: there is no need to look for us. Bring constitutional law back to the country, and we will return ourselves,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 17, the Homiel Regional Court sentenced Sudalenka to five years in a medium-security penal colony in absentia<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court also ordered him to pay a fine of 26,000 rubels (over $7,900). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was accused of facilitating extremism in connection with his work for Viasna, designated as an extremist group by Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
