August 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated six people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,371, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six were accused or convicted of violent disorder. Alaksandar Tarasievi\u010d was sentenced to 1.5 years’ imprisonment. Natalla Burako\u016dskaja, also charged with tax evasion, to three years. Ala\u016dtyna Hudkova went on trial in Brest on August 6. D\u017amitryj Mirski and D\u017amitryj B\u0142a\u0161\u010danica were sentenced to unknown terms. D\u017amitryj Famin, also charged with libeling the head of state, was taken into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights activists noted that the right to peaceful assembly was guaranteed by Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. “No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others,” the article says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also demanded freedom for these and all other political prisoners and an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
