September 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> At least 2,579 people have been convicted in Belarus of violent disorder charges in connection with postelection protests four years ago, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights defenders noted upcoming trials of at least 33 people under Article 342 of the Criminal Code this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group has documented the highest number of trials in Minsk and the Brest region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latter region is notorious for holding trials involving more than one defendant, with hearings scheduled in Brest and Biaroza this week against 11 and four persons, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politically-motivated persecution continues unabated as police keep arresting more dissenters, Viasna noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,374 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
