September 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian city \u200b\u200band town dwellers tend to support closer ties with Russia over closer relations with the European Union (EU), according to a Chatham House survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forty-two percent of respondents said Belarus should maintain close ties Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While 34 percent said it is beneficial for Belarus in all respects, 8 percent said that from the economic viewpoint it would make more sense for Belarus to foster its relationship with the EU, but it should get stick with Russia generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 23 percent who supported closer ties with the EU, 13 percent said it would be beneficial in all respects, while 10 percent said it makes more sense economically for Belarus to foster its relationship with Russia, but the country should generally seek closer ties with the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-five percent did not have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As usual, Belarusians falls into the three categories, the pollster said, with the pro-Russian and pro-neutral groups being more dominant than the pro-Western category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only 13 percent said Belarus was likely or very likely to enter the EU in the next 15 years, while 51 percent said it was unlikely or highly unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-six percent did not have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, 24 percent marked off the Belarusian government as the main obstacle to EU accession, while 23 percent said Belarusians do not want EU membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roughly the same proportion, 21 percent, said the EU did not want it, and another 21 percent said it was impossible because of the country’s political system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, 20 percent said Russia was an obstacle (respondents were allowed to pick several options).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey showed that only 22 percent of respondents visited the EU in the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also highlighted a strong demand for European travel and education among Belarusians, but many respondents pointed to inaccessible visas and other limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The think tank polled 827 city and town residents online between June 28 and July 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
