September 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s office is extremely happy with the upcoming release of 30 more political prisoners and continues to work with its international allies for the release of others, said Franak Via\u010dorka, chief adviser to the Belarusian opposition leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the pardon does not indicate a change in the regime’s policy, Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They arrest and jail more people than they release. The prison conditions for political prisoners are deteriorating and are unbearable for people. The case of \u0160arenda-Panasiuk vividly shows the brutality of the entire system. We cannot keep silent about this,” Via\u010dorka said, demanding an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, media reported that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka pardoned seven women and 23 men convicted on protest-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja called for sustained international pressure to free hundreds of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the husband of designated political prisoner Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk expressed concern about his wife’s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders have recognized 1,371 as current political prisoners, but the actual number is significantly higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
