September 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> At least 1,777 NGOs, including associations, trade unions and foundations, were dissolved between the 2020 presidential election and late August 2024, Lawtrend said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure was 1,509 at the end of December 2023 and 1,173 at the end of December 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of August, at least 1,116 NGOs were ordered to shut down and 661 filed for dissolution on their own because of pressure on their members, the unfavorable legal environment and political reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawtrend reports that authorities keep subjecting NGOs to inspections and issuing warnings. Their employees fall victim to smear campaigns in the state-run media, which keep promoting government-established organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rights group also recorded the first sentence on charges of illegal activities of a public association after the re-introduction of the corresponding article into the Criminal Code two years ago: former head of children’s hospice Volha Viali\u010dka was given nine years in prison. Authorities persecuted her under special proceedings targeting exiled opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early August, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka presented a bill amending penalties for dozens of offenses, including new sanctions for violating legislation on receiving foreign donations, Lawtrend noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
