September 10,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 1,100 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus since the start of September, says Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From September 1 to 9, Poland thwarted at least 913 attempts; Latvia, 113; Lithuania, 74. For the past five days, Belarus-EU border crossings exceeded 100 attempts daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings spiked almost 70 percent compared to early August, including a nine-fold increase reported by Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 29,481 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 24,736 attempts via Poland, 4,205 via Latvia and 540 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
