September 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Polish authorities have extended the 90-day border area entry ban at the shared border with Belarus for another 90 days, the Polish interior ministry’s press office reports, citing the September 10 directive by Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially introduced on June 13, the ban restricted access to some areas along about 60 km of the Polish-Belarusian border in Podlaskie Voivodeship. In some sections, it was 200 meters wide, while in the Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Forest it extended up to two kilometers. The ban did not cover towns and tourist routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siemoniak praised the effectiveness of the ban, noting that it targeted people who facilitate illegal migration, helped protect the border and ensured the safety of police officers, border guards and soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From June 13 to September 9, Poland thwarted 6,130 illegal border crossings via Belarus, 64 percent less compared to three months before the ban, the interior ministry noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw sees the crisis as a \u201chybrid war\u201d against Poland, organized and coordinated by Minsk and Moscow. Earlier, Poland constructed a 186-km long border fence at its shared border with Belarus designed to deter illegal migrants trying to enter the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
