September 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Latvian parliament’s Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee approved the bill on traffic law, which among other things, bans Belarus-registered cars in Latvia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If adopted by Latvian MPs, the ban would force vehicles with Belarusian license plates to either leave Latvia or obtain a Latvian registration by October 31, the parliament’s press office reports. Cars may be confiscated if the owners fail to comply by the deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 5, the bill banning Belarus-registered vehicles from Latvia on November 1 passed the first reading at the Latvian parliament. The justice ministry proposed two exceptions. One is related to vehicles owned by people with limited mobility. The other one is related to outstanding security cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 29, the EU Council adopted new restrictive measures targeting the Belarusian economy to punish the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime for involvement in Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, it broadened the prohibition on transporting goods by road in the EU, by trailers and semi-trailers registered in Belarus, including when hauled by trucks registered outside Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July, cars with Belarusian license plates were banned from entering the EU through the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
