{"id":10468,"date":"2023-11-04T10:39:12","date_gmt":"2023-11-04T07:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=10468"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"update-on-arrests-trials-politically-motivated-persecution-66","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/10468\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on arrests, trials, politically-motivated persecution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>November 4,\u00a0<em>Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New arrests and trials were reported across Belarus on November 3 as law enforcers fight a losing battle to stop people from following independent media, expressing support for the opposition and criticizing the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry and Committee for State Security (KGB) added nearly 40 entries to their extremist and terrorist lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pro-government Telegram channel reported the arrest of a Coca-Cola employee for online comments in support of the Kastus Kalino\u016dski Regiment, a Belarusian military unit under Ukrainian command, and subscriptions to media outlets labeled by the government extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A district judge sentenced Vasil Palako\u016d, a former chairman of the now defunct United Civic Party, to 15 days in jail for alleged possession of information material promoting extremist activity, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A district judge in Rasony, Viciebsk region, made a ruling in a case against Alaksandar Cyryka\u016d, a Protestant pastor, and his wife Nina. Both were accused of breaking regulations governing mass gatherings under Article 24.23 of the Administrative Offenses Code, Chry\u015bcianskaja Vizija reported. The verdict is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>District judges in Brest on October 16 and Minsk on October 20 fined a man and a woman, respectively, for possessing and allegedly displaying Belarusian-themed items \u2013 a key fob with the Pahonia coat of arms and a white-red-white umbrella, <em>zerkalo.io <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Siarhiej Ir\u0161yn of the Ma\u0142adzie\u010dna District Court, Minsk region, sentenced journalist Alaksandar Mancevi\u010d to four years in prison after finding him guilty of discrediting the state by his reporting, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mancevi\u010d, editor in chief and co-founder of the privately-owned newspaper <em>Rehijanalnaja Hazieta<\/em>, has also been fined 94,000 rubels (over $29,000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prosecutor said he was &#8220;spreading deliberately false information in the newspaper and its online resources\u201d from January 1, 2020 to March 15, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journalist pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dozens new additions to extremist list<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry added 33 names to the list of &#8220;persons involved in extremist activities,&#8221; taking their total to 3,478, according to its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jailed human rights defender Anastasija \u0141ojka, currently serving a seven-year prison term on charges of inciting hatred, is one of the new additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four designated as terrorists<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The KGB designated four people as terrorists, including three men recognized as political prisoners by human rights defenders. The new additions are Juryj Ta\u0161kina\u016d, serving a three-year sentence for donations to solidarity groups; D\u017amitryj Bohu\u0161, convicted of defaming the head of state; Raman Cyhanko\u016d, convicted of calling for sanctions; and Arciom Janko\u016dski, charged with rioting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Late on November 3, human rights defenders listed at least 1,462 identified political prisoners, but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
