September 13, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials may face new European Union sanctions if they fail to ensure a free and fair presidential election in Belarus next year, Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Simonas \u0160at\u016bnas has said at a conference in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU should do more in terms of sanctions against Minsk in addition to focusing on punishing Moscow for unleashing a full-scale war against Ukraine, the diplomat stressed in his address at the Vilnius conference discussing accountability for human rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius will keep lobbying for more restrictions against individuals and companies involved in human rights abuse in Belarus along with sectoral sanctions, including on Belarus\u2019 potash exports, \u0160at\u016bnas noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seventh presidential election in Belarus is to be held no later than July 20, 2025. The BelPol association of former law enforcers warned that it might be brought forward to February 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice Hub, a non-profit, and the office of Dainius \u017dalimas, a European parliament member, organized the conference Accountability for Crimes and Human Rights Violations in Belarus in the framework of a project on justice for regime victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
