September 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Minsk City Court has sentenced historian Ihar Mielnika\u016d to four years in prison, finding him guilty of facilitating extremism by giving an interview to Euroradio<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Brest, 11 defendants were found guilty of protesting on August 10, 2020. It was the seventh group tried for “grossly disturbing public order” that day, Viasna Brest reported. The court sentenced Mika\u0142aj Misiuk to a year behind bars; Michai\u0142 Vieram\u010duk, to two years of restricted freedom in home confinement; D\u017amitry Sa\u0142aviejka, to two and a half years of restricted freedom; Illa Sabko, Alaksandar Zajca\u016d, Mika\u0142aj Kapluk, Kiry\u0142 Ja\u016dtu\u0161yk, Artur Zaremba, D\u017amitry \u0141ysiuk, Aleh Bandaruk and Dzianis Jakavienka, to 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mazyr District Court began the trial of Pavie\u0142 Kiebiec, accused of publicly insulting the head of state, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials opened a new criminal case against activist Mika\u0142aj Dziadok, who is serving a five-year prison sentence. They charged him with malicious disobedience to prison authorities. Dziadok was due to be released in April 2025, Novy \u010cas<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An extremism case was opened against Hanna A\u016d\u010dy\u0144nikava, who sent two parcels to imprisoned activists \u0179micier Da\u0161kievi\u010d and \u015aviatas\u0142a\u016d Udot. The woman had been arrested in January near a metro station in Minsk. Security officers searched her home and seized equipment, including a refrigerator. She later fled Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judges in the Hrodna region considered a couple of cases under the Code of Administrative Offenses (an article banning the distribution of extremist content). Ludmi\u0142a Varaniuk was tried in Hrodna and Alena S\u0142abiejka in the Kareli\u010dy district. The verdicts are unknown, Pravo Imeyut reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0179micier \u017da\u0142niaruk and Mikita Mierhasa\u016d were arrested for protesting in 2020, Mediazona<\/em> reported. According to a police video, their unnamed common friend is already serving a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities put Siar\u017euk Sys, a Viasna activist and journalist, on an international wanted list. They suspect him and other guests of the “Plan:B” show on the Polish-based television station Belsat<\/em> of promoting extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia has designated Belsat<\/em> as an \u201cundesirable organization.\u201d Despite the station’s declared impartiality, it is working to discredit Russia\u2019s domestic and foreign policy, cast it in a negative light and criticize integration, the Russian Prosecutor\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2024, officers have arrested more than 55 people upon return to Belarus and brought criminal charges against 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 37 people were added to the list of persons “involved in extremist activity” yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 14, human rights defenders identified at least 1,344 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
