September 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The head of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s administration has said that the 1939 unification of Belarus “within its current borders” launched a period of economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Practically every sector doubled or tripled. A great number of social and industrial facilities was opened in a year,” D\u017amitryj Krutoj said, opening a renovated road section in Mahilo\u016d. He attributed it to a “historic spiritual uplift of the nation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomorrow, \u0141uka\u0161enka’s supporters will celebrate National Unity Day, marking the unification of the Western Belarus and Eastern Belarus as a result of the Soviet invasion of Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland had received the Western Belarus under the Treaty of Riga of 1921.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krutoj criticized the Polish authorities for turning the Western Belarus into an agrarian region. “The Poles closed almost all industrial enterprises. Only two large factories operated there: a match factory in Pinsk and a plywood factory in Hrodna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That was all that remained after almost 18 years of their occupation. So, when the country was reunited, rapid development of industry and agriculture began,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not mention the collectivization and mass repression conducted by the Soviet government at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus emerged as an independent state within its current borders in 1991. They do not match the 1939 frontier of the Byelorussian SSR, as the Soviets gave away the Bia\u0142ystok region to Poland in 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian pro-democracy movement has criticized National Unity Day as a propaganda stunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
