September 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian officers have arrested a 23-year-old Latvian national for trying to smuggle 1.06 g of amphetamine into the country, the State Customs Committee (SCC) reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man has been charged with illegal transportation of drugs for the purpose of sale. The Latvian foreign ministry and the suspect’s relatives have been “promptly notified” of the arrest, the SCC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“However, the Latvian side is staging provocation by announcing in the media that this person has disappeared in Belarus due to Belarusian special services’ illegal actions,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the Latvian consulate in Viciebsk contacted Belarusian authorities regarding the disappearance of Latvian national Emils Asars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His relatives said that he might have been arrested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Latvian foreign ministry, human rights violations in Belarus and Russia limit Latvia\u2019s ability to help its citizens there. The exchange of information is slow and legal cooperation with Belarus is minimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riga has repeatedly called on its citizens to avoid traveling to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
