September 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Members of the European Parliament discussed a resolution on Belarus’ political prisoners at yesterday’s session in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft posted on the parliament’s website said there were more than 1,300 political prisoners in the country. Many of them were arbitrarily detained and held in life-threatening conditions. They included people with serious illnesses and mental disorders, people over 60 years of age, and minors. Some were held incommunicado for a long time. At least six people died behind bars since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft resolution mentioned dozens political prisoners pardoned this year. However, Belarusian authorities continue to persecute former prisoners even after their release, subjecting them to regular checks and initiating new criminal cases against them, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It called for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners held by the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We insist that political prisoners must receive proper medical assistance, access to legal counsel and family members. We underline the need to provide prisoners’ access to diplomats and international organisations in order to independently assess their condition and provide aid,” the lawmakers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, they called on the European Union to expand and strengthen its sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for reprisal in Belarus and to ensure their proper application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
