September 20, Pozirk. <\/strong>The European Union countries did not allow at least 2,190 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus from September 1 to 18, found Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings into the EU via Belarus rose by 40 percent from last month and almost 62 percent compared to July’s numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland thwarted 1,859 illegal border crossings this month, twice as many as in the same period in August. Lithuania did not allow 142 illegal migrants to enter its territory, a 3.6-fold increase month on month, while Latvia stopped 189 illegal migrants, 37 percent fewer than last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 30,566 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, with 25,677 attempts via Poland alone, 4,281 via Latvia and 608 via Lithuania. Over the past four days border guards have been reporting more than 100 daily illegal border crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
