September 20, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Vilnius District Court has sentenced Lithuanian lawyer Mantas Danielius to nine years in prison after finding him guilty of spying for Belarus, Delfi<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence is two years shorter than requested by the prosecutor and can be appealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators accused Danielius of collecting information on the Belarusian opposition and its leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja based in Vilnius for a Belarusian woman who allegedly passed it to Minsk\u2019s intelligence services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danielius admitted that he cooperated with Belarus 1<\/em> propagandist Ksienija Lebiedzieva but said the investigators failed to prove her connections with the spy agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He refused to testify in court and said in his closing statement that \u201cvoluntary gathering of information\u201d was not espionage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
