September 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland must comply with its international human rights obligations at the border with Belarus, the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner Michael O’Flaherty urged<\/a> in a statement after visiting Poland on September 16\u201318.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit was prompted by long-standing reports of incidents at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing Poland’s role in helping millions of people fleeing the Russian war of aggression and the Belarusian government’s actions to destabilize the frontier, O’Flaherty said that Poland’s “summary return practice does not allow for full respect of international human rights standards.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The practice of summary returns of persons across the border to Belarus, without an individual assessment, including in some cases persons who have formally requested asylum on Polish territory, exposes them to the risk of serious violations of the rights protected by the European Convention on Human Rights,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noting the prominent role Poland plays in shaping European migration policies, the Commissioner encourages the Polish authorities to show leadership by developing a robust migration management system in which legitimate security concerns are accompanied by solid legal and policy safeguards to protect the dignity and human rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in full respect of international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the border between Belarus and the European Union has been ongoing since the spring of 2021. Poland, Latvia and Lithuania consider it a hybrid attack by Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the year, the three countries have reported more than 31,000 attempts of illegal immigration from Belarus, Pozirk<\/em> established. Poland alone has reported more than 26,000 cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
