September 23, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The interior ministry added 17 new names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities\u201d on Friday, taking the total of entries to 4,453, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All blacklisted people were convicted on charges that Belarusian authorities use to persecute political opponents yet only Illa Humbar, Vadzim \u0141ucevi\u010d and Alesia Siarhiejenka have been declared political prisoners so far. All three faced extremism-related charges but the sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja\u016dhien Antona\u016d, Arciom Hieniera\u0142a\u016d and Aksana Anton\u010danka were persecuted in similar cases involving association with opposition groups, donations to solidarity initiatives or posting politically-sensitive content on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaciaryna Valenciukievi\u010d, Mikita Hie\u016drasie\u016d, Alaksandar Zajac, U\u0142adzimir Marynin, Alaksandar Praskuryn, Stanis\u0142a\u016d and Julija Rahoj\u0161a were convicted over participating in 2020 postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksiej Kabicienka, Siarhiej Kozika\u016d, Siarhiej Kulik and Ukrainian Yuriy Bondarenko faced defamation charges, involving insults of officials and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are prohibited from engaging in education activity, publishing, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record annulment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
