September 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A group of independent experts will conduct an independent probe into human rights abuse in Belarus since May 2020, Karinna Moskalenko, head of the group, has told the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She expressed hope that evidence would be reliable enough to be used in court proceedings. She is to deliver the final report in March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation \u201cmakes no sense\u201d and will not produce any credible results, argued \u0141arysa Bielskaja, Belarus’ permanent representative to the UN, describing the investigation as interference in her country\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azerbaijan, China and Kazakhstan along with Cuba, Eritrea, Egypt, Iran, Laos, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe supported non-interference claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union’s and United States\u2019 representatives aligned with the UN expert group, expressing concern about serious human rights abuses in Belarus and attacks on the rights of exiled Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine condemned systematic reprisals targeting Belarusian regime critics, warning that politically-motivated persecution may pick up pace ahead of the 2025 presidential election. Kyiv’s representative called on Minsk to stop supporting Moscow’s war, holding drills near the shared border and facilitating forced transfers of Ukrainian kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HRC session is being held from September 9 to October 11. On the last day, delegates are expected to vote for a UN candidate to analyze human rights in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nils Mui\u017enieks, a former Council of Europe rights commissioner, is said to be favorite to be elected as special rapporteur on Belarus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
