September 23, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The United Nations should demand that Alaksandar Lukashenka end the incommunicado detention of Belarusian political prisoners, opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has told the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN may help ensure that all political prisoners have access to medical care and contact with their families, the politician said in a video address. \u201cThis is not just a political issue, it is a matter of life and death,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja asked the world leaders to use their influence in prioritizing the release of political prisoners and punishing those responsible for human rights abuse in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HRC session is being held from September 9 to October 11. On the last day, delegates are expected to vote for a UN candidate to analyze human rights in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nils Mui\u017enieks, a former Council of Europe rights commissioner, is said to be favorite to be elected as special rapporteur on Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
