September 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus from September 21 to 23 included an extremist group designation for the RADA Belarusian National Youth Council and the Belarusian Women’s Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry branded several social media accounts as extremist, including Baranovichi Novosti <\/em>and wooddecor.ru<\/em> on Instagram; VESTOCHKA <\/em>on YouTube, Ksiu\u0161a\u0144ka<\/em>, Acmurely Lachankin<\/em> and Seattle Belarusians <\/em>on X; pravtb <\/em>and corbanz <\/em>on TikTok as well as a YouTube video by blogger Volha Takar\u010duk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry said it added 17 new names to its register of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities\u201d on Friday, taking the total of entries to 4,453.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests and trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a married couple for participating in 2020 postelection protests, a pro-government source said. The woman’s name may be Asia Ilnickaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few days, Nadzieja Hrek, Valeryj Taratuta and Iryna Adamovi\u010d were tried in the Hrodna region and Ta\u0107ciana Litviankova in the Homiel region, for sharing opposition content, rights defenders reported. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, a judge in Hrodna sentenced Aksana Lapko to three years in prison on charges of facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same day, Le\u016d I\u016d\u010dyn was given two years of restricted freedom in home confinement for participating in protests in Mahilo\u016d, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artur Memiech went on trial in Minsk on Monday on extremism-related charges, Viasna noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 24, human rights defenders identified at least 1,322 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
