September 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Australia supports Belarusians’ desire for transparent, free and fair elections and democracy, Australian Ambassador to Poland Benjamin Hayes said after meeting with Belarusian opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka yesterday in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Very good meeting today with @PavelLatushka to discuss the deeply concerning situation in Belarus,” Hayes said on Twitter (X).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka told the ambassador about the situation in Belarus in the run-up to \u201cAlaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s attempt to reappoint himself in 2025,\u201d reported the opposition\u2019s United Transitional Cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suggested specific ways for Australia to help Belarusians, including support for Belarusian pro-democracy groups, independent media and efforts to create a sense of national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka called on the envoy to act now, not wait for a reform in Russia. Most Belarusians do not support Moscow’s war on Ukraine and \u0141uka\u0161enka, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He underscored the importance of pressure on \u0141uka\u0161enka and uniform sanctions against Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting was part of \u0141atu\u0161ka’s regular consultations with officials from democratic countries, the cabinet said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, he met with diplomats from the UK, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Sweden, as well as the European Union special representative for human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
