September 26,\u00a0<\/strong>Pozirk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Human rights defenders from the German-Swiss organization Libereco have picketed the Belarusian embassy in Brussels, Belgium, and handed diplomats a petition demanding the release of Viasna founder Ale\u015b Bialacki and other political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The picket marked Bialacki’s 62nd birthday on September 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Facebook page<\/a> of rights activist Leanid Sudalenka, 82,281 people from 80 countries signed the petition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2023, Libereco called on supporters<\/a> to sign a petition for the release of Bialacki and other Belarusian political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Libereco \u2013 Partnership for Human Rights is an independent NGO defending human rights in Belarus and Ukraine. It was launched in 2009. According to its website, Libereco cooperates with Belarusian and Ukrainian organizations and initiatives and “people on the ground.” In 2023, Libereco staged 17 demonstrations in different countries to raise awareness of human rights violations in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna Human Rights Center head Bialacki, his associates Valancin Stefanovi\u010d and U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d have been held in prison since July 2021. On March 3, 2023, they were sentenced to 10, nine and seven years, respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Bialacki was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (he shares the award with human rights organizations Memorial, Russia, and Center for Civil Liberties, Ukraine). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the eve of Bialacki’s birthday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee met with his wife and\u00a0demanded<\/a>\u00a0his immediate release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
