September 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Instead of being a permanent threat, Belarus should be a donor of peace and stability in new European security architecture, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said, summing up the message she had conveyed to the international community during the UN General Assembly’s 79th session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja expressed her support for Ukraine’s peace proposal. The war must end, Ukraine must take back its territory and those responsible for the war must be punished, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is extremely important for Belarusians that any agreements take into account their interests, she added. That is why her team insisted that the Russian troops and nuclear weapons be withdrawn from Belarus and that the military-political agreements concluded between Minsk and Moscow after 2020 be annulled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the opposition leader, progress toward lasting peace also requires the release of Belarusian political prisoners, free and fair elections and a constitutional reform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Only Belarus’ democratically elected leadership could guarantee the security of Ukraine and our other neighbors,” she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja is in the United States from September 22 to 28. This week, she participated in several events on Belarus and Ukraine, including a conference on Belarusian political prisoners organized by the EU delegation, the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit and the Clinton Global Initiative meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also met with Josep Borrell, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, and Beth Van Schaack, the US ambassador-at-large for global criminal justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
