September 27, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Four years of reprisals have not forced Belarusians to accept dictatorship, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said yesterday, receiving the Lantos Human Rights Prize in the United States. Belarusians continue to show courage and pay a high price for their freedom, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second laureate was Evgenia Kara-Murza, the wife of Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for apparently political reasons and expelled from the country during a prisoner swap between Russia and the West on August 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja’s press office quoted her saying that she received the prize on behalf of all those who keep fighting, such as journalists, brave women, human rights defenders and activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said the 2020 revolution will continue until victory and called on supporters to fight for freedom, justice and common people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also called on the USA and other democratic nations to keep up their support for Ukraine and Belarus and put pressure on the regimes of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lantos Human Rights Prize has been awarded since 2009, usually to one person a year. However, 2015 and 2021 saw exceptions (three and two, respectively). It was established to raise awareness of human rights violations and those fighting against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its winners included Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, a native of Belarus, as well as Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, and Hillary Clinton, a former US secretary of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
