September 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja met with US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell to discuss ways to free political prisoners, including those on the humanitarian list, the office of the Belarusian opposition leader reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talks in Washington also focused on support for victims of persecution, civil society and independent media, including financial aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two discussed initiatives to assert Belarusian national identity, the Strategic Dialogue between the United States and the Belarusian pro-democracy movement, ways to eliminate sanctions loopholes, bringing those responsible for reprisals to justice and establish political and diplomatic contacts with third countries and international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian politician also talked about the threat of Russia dragging Belarus into its war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was a practical meeting,” Cichano\u016dskaja said. “First of all, we discussed steps to free political prisoners and end repression. I am happy that we see eye to eye the situation and that the issue remains a priority for the USA. It is also important that the ideas and projects we discussed during the Strategic Dialogue are getting off the ground. I thank the United States for its consistent position, solidarity and support.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja and Campbell had a meeting in Vilnius on September 12. The US deputy secretary of state assured her that Washington will continue to support the Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
