Sweden and other European Union countries are ready to look for common solutions, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brussels is currently working on new European sanctions against Minsk and Sweden is ready to join the initiatives that will be put forward, the diplomat noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on her new appointment as the special envoy for relations with the Belarusian opposition, Johannesson hoped for more effective cooperation with both Belarusian civil society and democratic forces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johannesson, Sweden&#8217;s Ambassador to Belarus from 2017 to 2022, is currently also serving as Sweden&#8217;s Ambassador for the EU&#8217;s Eastern Partnership and is based in Stockholm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden became the fifth EU country after France, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland to appoint a special envoy for contacts with the Belarusian opposition after their ambassadors terminated their missions in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of November 6, human rights defenders identified at least 1,462 political prisoners in Belarus but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November 6, Pozirk.
