October 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Maryna Alisiejenka went on trial in Minsk on protest- and extremism-related charges, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. She was arrested earlier this year during a raid targeting initiatives helping political prisoners and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on October 2 include a trial in absentia of the opposition activist Ba\u017eena \u017do\u0142ud\u017a in Mahilo\u016d. The supporter of \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s presidential campaign is accused of insulting a judge, calling for sanctions and sharing personal data. Judge Siarhiej Mazura\u016d closed the proceedings to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ema \u015aciepulonak in Miory, Viciebsk region, faces new criminal charges after her release from prison last May, where she had served two years for online comments, Mediazona<\/em> reported. Authorities accuse the former teacher of insulting an official in connection with critical social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Businessman Raman Ci\u0161kievi\u010d is on trial in Minsk on charges of violent disorder, usually filed against 2020 protesters, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-government sources reported an arrest of a 41-year-old man for posting online comments on the Nexta <\/em>Telegram channel two years ago. Another arrest is linked to participation in 2020 postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A post office employee was arrested in Minsk for an anti-police tattoo and may have been jailed for 15 days, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna authorities closed down a foundation that had been promoting Jewish culture since 2018, the Pravo Imeyut <\/em>Telegram channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,287 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
