October 4, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has urged officials to launch a new program to revive the Pale\u015bsie (Polesia) region in southern Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his trip to the Pinsk district, the heartland of Pale\u015bsie, the Belarusian ruler visited the Parachonskaje farm, his press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, he said that the government had adopted a program for the marshy region, but failed to put it into practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government should focus on several big projects instead of scattering around resources, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that he was talking about the areas between Pinsk and the Homiel region’s Mazyr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mazyr district has enough cash and production facilities, but funds should be channeled in other areas of Pale\u015bsie, \u0141uka\u0161enka suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He instructed his official representative for the Brest region, Michai\u0142 Rusy, to oversee the Pale\u015bsie revival programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If we put Pale\u015bsie in order, we will feed the whole country at Pale\u015bsie’s expense. Pale\u015bsie cannot be abandoned,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of state called for growing “more southern crops,” citing the region’s warmer climate. He also urged officials to consider introducing “land irrigation technologies.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2020, ahead of the presidential election, \u0141uka\u0161enka said that he considered Pale\u015bsie’s revival one of the most important areas of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty years ago, in April 2004, he stated the need for sorting out Pale\u015bsie’s lands, cities and healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2011\u20132015, crews completed the reconstruction of drainage systems and drained an area of 283,000 ha. Some 130,000 ha were drained in 2013\u20132014 and 184,000 ha in 2015\u20132020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, scientists said that 10 percent of the land used in agriculture on peatlands had degraded after the drainage. There were 212,000 ha of degraded peatlands in Belarus in 2012. By 2022, the area expanded to 312,000 ha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the land hit by wind erosion is located in Pale\u015bsie, where thousands of kilometers of drainage canals disrupted the natural hydrology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
