October 6, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The interior ministry added 13 new names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities\u201d on Friday, taking the total of entries to 4,489, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All blacklisted people were convicted on criminal charges that Belarusian authorities use to persecute political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups consider seven of them political prisoners: Anton \u0160arupa, Aleh Pivavar, Vital and Nadzieja Leskaviec, Alaksandar Barodzi\u010d, Ina P\u0142achatniuk and Armenian national Ervand Martirosyan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juryj Ruk\u0161ta and Ja\u016dhien Barysienka who are reportedly serving sentences also feature in the updated extremist register. Ihar Ciera\u0161ko\u016d, Alaksiej and Ludmi\u0142a Pa\u016d\u0142ovi\u010d have criminal records and may be serving non-custodial sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another addition to the list is exiled politician Franak Via\u010dorka, an aide to Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja. Last week, he was also branded a terrorist in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, the Minsk City Court sentenced Via\u010dorka to a 20-year prison term in a politically-motivated case without the defendant being present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are prohibited from engaging in education activity, publishing, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record annulment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
