October 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated nine people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,287, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dzianis Andro\u0161\u010dyk, Hanna Vasiluk, Raman Parfiona\u016d, Mika\u0142aj Pratasievi\u010d, Arciom Basa\u0142aj, Valeryj Ra\u016dko\u016dski, Anastasija Ilnickaja, Alaksandar Pratasiuk and Alaksiej Martyna\u016d are being investigated for or have been convicted of violent disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights activists noted that the right to peaceful assembly was guaranteed by Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others,” the article says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights defenders called on the Belarusian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners, reconsider politically motivated sentences, and end political repression against the country’s citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement was signed by the Viasna Human Rights Center, Belarusian PEN, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, and Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
