October 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> At least 1,803 nonprofits, including associations, trade unions and foundations, were dissolved between the 2020 presidential election and the end of September 2024, Lawtrend said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December, the human rights group counted 1,509 closed nonprofits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of last month, at least 1,137 NGOs were ordered to shut down and 666 filed for dissolution on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, most of the latter decided to disband because of pressure on their members, the unfavorable legal environment and political reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the overall negative trend, new nonprofits were registered in Belarus. As of September 30, human rights defenders were aware of at least 16 newly registered nongovernmental organizations, four foundations and 16 public associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the number of registrations exceeds the number of closures by a factor of 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Lawtrend notes that authorities are widely using anti-extremism laws against civil society activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
